"Texas Walnut Pie"

AmountIngredient
Crust: 
1 1/2 cupsall purpose flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoonsalt
1/4 cupcold butter, cut in chunks
1/4 cupvegetable shortening
1egg yolk
2 tablespoonswater
1/2 teaspoonvinegar
Filling: 
1/2 cupbutter
4 tablespoonscocoa
3/4 cuphot water
1/2 cupall purpose flour
2 cupsgranulated sugar
Dashsalt
5 ounce canevaporated milk
1egg
1 cupwalnuts or pecans, coarsely chopped

Preparation Instructions:

1. For crust, sift flour and salt together in a bowl. Cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. Beat the egg yolk with the water and the vinegar. Mix into the flour, stirring until the mixture forms a ball.

3. Roll out the dough on a floured board to fit a 9 inch pie pan. Trim and flute edges.

4. Prebake crust for 5 minutes at 400 degrees.

5. For filling, in a saucepan slowly melt the butter.

6. Add the cocoa. Blend until smooth. Stir the hot water into the cocoa mixture and blend.

7. In a large bowl, mix the flour sugar and salt with a whisk until well combined.

8. Stir cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients. Add the milk and egg. Blend until absolutely smooth.

9. Stir in the nuts. Pour into the pie shell.

10. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

11. Cool before cutting into thin slices. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

Per serving: 655 calories; 36.9 g fat; 8.1 g protein; 77.6 g carbohydrates; 390 mg sodium.
