Treacle Scones

AmountIngredient
8 ounces / 225 gplain flour
1/2 teaspoonbicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
1/2 teaspoonground mixed spice
1 teaspooncream of tartar
1/2 teaspoonsalt
1/2 teaspoonground nutmeg
1 ounce / 25 gmargarine
1 ounce / 25 gcaster sugar (granulated sugar)
1 tablespoonblack treacle (molasses)
5 tablespoonsmilk

Preparation Instructions:

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, mixed spice, cream of tartar, salt and nutmeg into a bowl. Rub in the margarine and stir in the sugar. Mix with the treacle and 1 1/2 tablespoons milk to a dough. Turn on to a lightly floured board, knead lightly until smooth and roll out to 1/2 inch / 12 mm thick. Cut into rounds and arrange them on a greased baking tray. Brush with the rest of the milk and bake in a hot oven (450 F / 230 C, gas mark 8) for 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

To freeze: Open-freeze on a baking tray, bag when frozen and use within 4 months.
