Nutty Pear Pie

AmountIngredient
Nut Crumble Pie Shell: 
1 cupall purpose flour
1/2 teaspoonsalt
1/3 cupshortening
1 tablespoonbutter or margarine
3 tablespoonsice water
1/3 cupfinely chopped pecans or walnuts
Filling: 
4 cupssliced, pared pears
2/3 cupgranulated sugar
1 teaspooncinnamon
2 tablespoonscornstarch
Dashsalt
Streusel Topping: 
1/4 cupbrown sugar, packed
1/3 cupall-purpose flour
2 tablespoonssoft butter
1/2 teaspooncinnamon
1/4 teaspoonnutmeg
 Whipped cream, for garnish, optional

Preparation Instructions:

1. For crust, combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening and butter until the shortening is about the size of peas.

2. Blend in the water and nuts until mixture is about the consistency of large curd cottage cheese.

3. Press into the bottom and sides of a 9 inch pie pan, building up the edge and crimping the edge attractively. Chill 10 minutes.

4. For filling, in a bowl combine the pears, sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch and salt. Turn into the pie shell to make an even layer.

5. For streusel topping, combine the ingredients using a fork or pastry blender until mixture makes soft crumbs.

6. Sprinkle over the pears.

7. Bake at 375 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes or until the pears are cooked and streusel is browned. Garnish with whipped cream, if desired.
