Date Fanned Coffee Cake

Preparation Instructions:1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a small bowl. Add a pinch of sugar. Let stand about 5 minutes.
2. In a large bowl, combine melted butter, salt, egg, brown sugar and milk. Mixture should be lukewarm when adding dissolved yeast.
3. Stir in flour, 1 cup at a time, until soft dough is formed. Knead on floured board until smooth, 5 or 10 minutes.
4. Place in a buttered bowl. Cover. Let rise 1 hour or until doubled.
5. Make date filling. Cool.
6. Punch dough down. Roll out into a 9 by 18 inch rectangle. Spread with softened butter. Spread filling and walnuts, if used, on 2/3 of dough. Fold unspread dough over half of spread dough. Fold again making 3 layers. Seal edges.
7. Place on buttered baking sheet. Cut 8 to 10 strips, along length of rectangle to within 1 inch of opposite side. Separate strips slightly. Cover.
8. Let rise about 30 minutes. Sprinkle with walnuts.
9. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
Date Filling: Cook dates and water over medium heat until soft and thick, about 10 minutes.
