Oven-Barbecued Brisket of Beef

    4 to 5 pound brisket of beef

  Liquid smoke (optional)

  2 cups (1/2 recipe) Texas Barbecue Sauce

  Texas Barbecue Sauce:

  2 medium onions, finely chopped (1 cup)

  1 clove garlic, finely chopped

  1/4 cup vegetable oil

  2 tablespoons chili powder

  2 cups ketchup

  1 cup cider or white vinegar

  1/2 cup lemon juice

  1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

  1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar

  2 tablespoons prepared mustard

  1 tablespoon celery seeds

  2 teaspoons cumin seeds, crushed

  2 tablespoons butter or margarine
